The Senior Architect - Digital Domain Capabilities role is an unique opportunity to support domain architecture efforts at Manulife / John Hancock, driving innovation and scalability through our strategic technology platforms.

offers the chance for a senior engineer with architecture skills to stay hands-on with cutting-edge Cloud Native technologies, influence enterprise-wide architecture
decisions, and contribute to a collaborative, forward-thinking engineering culture. This role would be an ideal fit for a seasoned web and mobile expert with significant exposure to agentic approaches related to software development, that wants to design and lead the next gen digital solutions for the business.
Office location: Toronto - Canada (ideally) or Waterloo - Canada or Boston - USA
Work arrangement: Hybrid - 3 days in office, 2 days from Home; Remote working option is not available.
Position Responsibilities:
Design and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performing web, mobile, and agentic architecture blueprints aligned with business and technical • requirements.
Define and document reference architectures, integration patterns, and technology stacks.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure architectural consistency across digital channels.
Lead architecture reviews and provide guidance on best practices for mobile, web, and agentic development.
Collaborate with delivery teams to ensure scalable, secure, and cost-effective implementations.
Develop reusable components and patterns using Azure Functions, Logic Apps, and Event Grid.
Lead proof-of-concepts, and present solution options with trade-offs using diagrams and whiteboarding tools.
Evaluate third-party solutions for integration with cloud native services.
Partner with engineering leads and developers for the related business functions to own and drive end-to-end delivery of technical solutions to the business.
Produce key design documents and incremental technical solution architecture artifacts based on project needs and our architectural target state.
Actively participate in all aspects of project life cycle, working closely with solution delivery teams and committed to business success.
Develop and enhance software frameworks, design patterns, and best practices.
Ability to whiteboard, present and discuss different solution options with pros & cons.
Collaborate and incorporate feedback from various stakeholders to drive design decisions.
Review artifacts like use cases, estimates, high level designs, low level designs, code, and provide appropriate feedback.
Review packaged solutions for technical fit and feasibility for integration.
Guide development teams and drive solutions through various review processes by leading and contributing to artifacts such as design diagrams, decision trees, pattern articulation, etc. at respective review boards (segment and global).
Identify complex issues in a timely manner and provide mitigation recommendations to the Project and Product leads.
Demonstrated leadership abilities in a complex environment in driving operational excellence and best practices.
Contribute to architecture and engineering communities across the company.
Hands-on experience with Azure PaaS, serverless, and containerized workloads (AKS, Container Apps).
Proficiency in C# or Java, Python, JavaScript within Azure Ecosystem.
Familiarity with modern front-end frameworks (React, Angular) and .NET Core APIs.
Exposure to JRE based (Java, Scala) Microservice and Agent development.
Exposure to vibe coding, testing, and code-gen frameworks, spec driven development, and codified architecture.
Experience in multi-agent scenarios, observability, data handling, and security considerations.
Exposure to agentic design with Microsoft and Salesforce Ecosystems, such as CoPilot Studio and Agentforce.
Hands on experience with agentic pro-code frameworks, including background on agentic orchestrations, design patterns, memory management, hand-offs, interaction protocols (MCP, A2A, etc.), Agentic RAG, Vector Databases.
Exposure to various agentic work flows (chat driven, semi/full-autonomous, hybrid, etc.) tied to business outcomes.
Exposure to working with various language models from an architecture perspective, such as private-cloud or PaaS hosted, tenanted, and security, data residency, and isolation controls around them.
Knowledge of data privacy and compliance standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).
Financial services industry experience preferred.
Required Qualifications:
8+ years in IT experience
2+ years' experience in architecting web and mobile applications using modern frameworks such as React, React Native, Angular, Flutter, Swift, or Kotlin.
Hands-on experience with Firebase services including Firestore, Firebase Authentication, analytics and Firebase Test Lab.
Strong understanding of cloud-native architecture, microservices, and API design.
Significant understanding and hands-on design experience with agentic solution design and development.
Ability to create and maintain architecture blueprints and roadmaps.
Documentation of architecture decisions and rationale.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience from large complex environment such as Financial or banking industry is highly preferred but not a must.

Salary range is expected to be between
$113,000.00 CAD - $163,000.00 CADEmployees also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn incentive compensation tied to business and individual performance.
